🏛️ The Acropolis of Pergamon (A UNESCO World Heritage Site)
Pergamon was one of the most influential ancient cities in the Greco-Roman world.
It was home to a massive political and religious center, heavily influenced by Greek and Roman rule.
The city’s Christian community was praised for its faithfulness in Revelation 2:12-17, but also warned for allowing pagan influence into their teachings.
🔥 Altar of Zeus – The “Throne of Satan” (Revelation 2:13)
This gigantic altar, mentioned in Revelation, was dedicated to Zeus, the chief god of Greek mythology.
The altar was later removed by German archaeologists and reconstructed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin, but its original foundation remains in Pergamon.
This was one of the strongest centers of Roman pagan worship, which explains why John called it “Satan’s Throne.”
📖 Biblical Reflection:
“I know where you dwell, where Satan’s throne is. Yet you hold fast my name and did not deny my faith…” – Revelation 2:13
🎭 The Steepest Ancient Theater in the World (Capacity: 10,000 people!)
Pergamon’s Hellenistic Theater is carved into a steep hillside, making it the most dramatically designed ancient theater in history.
Experience breathtaking panoramic views over the ancient city and surrounding valleys.
📚 The Library of Pergamon – A Rival to Alexandria
This was one of the largest libraries of the ancient world, housing over 200,000 scrolls.
The Egyptian Pharaoh banned the export of papyrus to Pergamon in order to protect the dominance of the Library of Alexandria.
Pergamon responded by developing “parchment” (from “Pergamon”), which replaced papyrus and became the standard writing material in Europe!
🏛️ The Red Basilica (The Red Court)
This massive Roman temple was originally dedicated to the Egyptian gods Serapis and Isis.
Later converted into a Christian church, it remains one of the largest surviving Byzantine churches in Asia Minor.

📍 Smyrna (Izmir) – One of the Strongest Christian Communities in the Early Church
Smyrna was a thriving trade city under Roman rule and one of the most faithful churches in Revelation.
The early Christian church in Smyrna was heavily persecuted, and many believers were martyred for their faith.
Jesus commended this church, saying, “Do not fear what you are about to suffer.” (Revelation 2:10)
🏛️ Mount Pagus & the Citadel of Lysimachos
Ascend Mount Pagus (modern-day Kadifekale) to see the ancient fortress built by Alexander the Great’s general, Lysimachos.
