Kas: A Coastal Gem on Turkey’s Turquoise Coast
Nestled on the Teke Peninsula in Antalya Province, Kas is a charming fishing village that seamlessly blends history, nature, and adventure. With its rugged mountains, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere, Kas has become a favorite among travelers looking for an authentic Mediterranean escape.
Surrounded by mountains that resemble human figures in repose, Kas is home to the famous rock formation “Yatam Adam”, meaning “Sleeping Man”. The town enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate, making it ideal for both sailing and agriculture. Lush groves of lemons, oranges, bananas, almonds, and pine forests thrive here, along with local honey and cut flowers.
Kas is also a popular departure point for Blue Cruises, offering breathtaking voyages along Turkey’s Turquoise Coast.
A Journey Through History
Though the Teke Peninsula has been inhabited since the Stone Age, Kas was first settled by the Lycian civilization, who named it Habesos (or Habesa). The Greeks later renamed it Antiphellos, turning it into a thriving port town.
During the Lycian and Roman periods, Antiphellos became a key trade hub, known for its timber and sponge exports. However, the town suffered from Arab incursions and was later annexed by the Seljuk Turks. When the Ottoman Empire took control, it flourished again.
After World War I and the Greek-Turkish population exchange, many of Kas’s Greek inhabitants left for Greece, leaving behind traces of their rich cultural heritage.
