Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii): A Timeless Architectural Marvel
📍 Location: Sultanahmet Square, Istanbul
🕌 One of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks, known for its breathtaking blue interior tiles
A Masterpiece of Ottoman Architecture
🏛️ Commissioned by Sultan Ahmed I and built between 1609 – 1616.
🎨 Named the “Blue Mosque” due to its stunning blue Iznik tiles that decorate the interior walls.
🏰 Constructed on the site of Byzantine imperial palaces, opposite Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome.
🕌 Features six towering minarets, an unprecedented number at the time.
Architectural Grandeur
🔹 Designed by Architect Sedefkar Mehmet Aga, blending Ottoman and Byzantine influences.
🔹 A magnificent series of domes and semi-domes, creating a harmonious skyline.
🔹 Grand entrance gates, intricate chandeliers, and colorful stained-glass windows illuminate the vast prayer hall.
🔹 A spacious courtyard, one of the largest among Ottoman mosques.
The Minarets Controversy
🛕 One of only two mosques in Istanbul with six minarets, sparking controversy as Mecca’s Great Mosque also had six at the time.
🛕 To resolve the dispute, Sultan Ahmed I funded the construction of a seventh minaret in Mecca.
📢 Traditionally, prayer-callers had to climb the minarets five times a day—now replaced by a public address system that echoes across Istanbul.
