Kiliclar Vadisi (Sword Valley): A Hidden Gem of Cappadocia
One of Cappadocia’s smallest yet most fascinating valleys, Kiliclar Vadisi (Sword Valley) is an adventurer’s paradise. Its name comes from the towering, sword-like rock formations that dominate the landscape, creating a surreal, almost medieval atmosphere. As you walk through the barren yet dramatic terrain, you may feel as if you’ve stepped back in time, surrounded by these sharp, pointed natural monoliths.
A Unique Geological Wonderland
Like much of Cappadocia, Sword Valley’s formations were shaped by the erosion of soft volcanic tuff over thousands of years. However, what makes it truly unique is:
A narrow gorge-like section, where hikers must climb down a sturdy ladder between wavy rock walls—a feature rarely seen elsewhere in the region.
Cone-topped fairy chimneys, some of which have been hollowed into cave dwellings and churches by early Christian settlers.
Abandoned dovecotes, carved at the highest points of the rocks by ancient communities who relied on pigeons for fertilizer and food.
A mysterious 300-meter tunnel, which leads deep into the cliffs before ending abruptly. Its original purpose remains unknown, but it may have been part of one of Cappadocia’s 36 underground cities.
How to Explore Sword Valley
The best way to experience Sword Valley is on foot. A marked trail begins above the Goreme Open-Air Museum and winds through the valley, eventually reconnecting below the museum. Along the way, the trail:
Connects with Red Valley, known for its stunning reddish-colored rock formations.
Leads to Cavusin Village, where visitors can explore the historic St. John’s Church.
Takes around two hours to complete at a comfortable hiking pace.
For those looking for an alternative adventure, quad biking and horseback riding tours offer another way to traverse the valley—just like the Silk Road traders did centuries ago.
Plan Your Visit
Whether you choose to hike, ride, or explore by quad, Sword Valley promises breathtaking scenery, hidden cave dwellings, and a journey through history—making it one of Cappadocia’s must-visit valleys.
