Pasabag (Monks Valley): The Land of Fairy Chimneys
Located on the Zelve road, between Goreme and Avanos, Pasabag, also known as Monks Valley, is home to some of the most spectacular fairy chimneys in Cappadocia. These towering cone-topped rock formations rise dramatically from the earth, creating an almost otherworldly landscape. The valley’s name, Pasabag (Pasha’s Vineyard), originates from an important Ottoman officer (Pasha) who once governed the region. However, it is more commonly referred to as Monks Valley due to the many monastic retreats carved into the fairy chimneys.
A Sanctuary for Monks
By the 4th century, Cappadocia had become a refuge for Christian monks, drawn to the region’s seclusion and natural fortifications. Among them was St. Simeon, a devout monk who sought complete isolation. He built his hermit home 15 meters above the ground, inside one of the fairy chimneys, descending only to collect food and water left by his followers. Inspired by his lifestyle, many other monks hollowed out the volcanic tuff, creating living quarters, staircases, and small chapels inside these natural rock towers. Today, visitors can still climb inside some of these formations for a breathtaking view over the valley.
The Fairy Chimneys of Monks Valley
The fairy chimneys of Pasabag are among the most impressive in Cappadocia. Some reach 15 meters in height and feature twin or even triple-headed formations. These mushroom-shaped rock pillars were sculpted by wind and rain over thousands of years. However, local legends say that fairies built these mystical structures to serve as entrances to their underground homes.
How to Visit Pasabag
Just a few kilometers from Goreme, Pasabag can easily be combined with a visit to the Goreme Open-Air Museum or the man-made stone dovecotes of Pigeon Valley.
Daily Cappadocia Tours often include a stop at Monks Valley, making it a convenient addition to any Cappadocia itinerary.
With its surreal landscapes, rich history, and spiritual significance, Pasabag (Monks Valley) is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Cappadocia.
