Hadrian’s Gate: The Majestic Roman Entrance to Antalya’s Old Town
Possibly Antalya’s most famous historical landmark, Hadrian’s Gate is a magnificent triple-arched gateway marking the entrance to Kaleiçi (Antalya’s Old Town). Built in 130 AD to commemorate Emperor Hadrian’s visit to the city, this imposing Roman structure remains one of the best-preserved examples of Roman architecture in the region.
Standing in the heart of Antalya, Hadrian’s Gate is located along Atatürk Boulevard, near the Hadrian tram stop, making it one of the city’s top attractions.
A Grand Monument of Roman Engineering
🏛️ Part of Antalya’s ancient city walls, Hadrian’s Gate once served as a grand ceremonial entrance to the city.
🎭 The three large arches stand over 4 meters wide and 6 meters high, with the entire structure reaching 8 meters due to its thick stone frame.
🪨 Four intricately carved marble columns on either side add to its majestic appearance, adorned with rich floral cornices.
A Tale of Two Towers
Interestingly, the two towers flanking Hadrian’s Gate are from different historical periods:
🏰 The Southern Tower (Tower of Julia Sancta) – Built during the Roman era, but at a different time than the gate itself.
🏗️ The Northern Tower – Only the base is from Roman times, while the upper structure was rebuilt by the Seljuk Turks centuries later.
This unique combination of Roman and Seljuk architecture showcases Antalya’s long and layered history.
