Aspendos: The Jewel of Roman Architecture in Turkey
Located 47 kilometers east of Antalya, Aspendos is home to the best-preserved Roman theatre in the ancient world. Once a thriving part of Pamphylia, this historic city was founded around 1000 BC by Greeks and flourished as a major trade center.
By the 5th century BC, Aspendos had become the capital of Pamphylia, earning great wealth from its production of salt, oil, and wool. Despite being 15 kilometers from the sea, merchants could transport goods inland via the Köprüçay River, making Aspendos a vital commercial hub.
The Magnificent Theatre of Aspendos
🏛️ Built during the reign of Marcus Aurelius (161-180 AD), the Aspendos Amphitheatre remains one of the most intact Roman theatres in existence today.
🎭 96 meters wide, it once seated approximately 7,000 spectators and still hosts concerts and performances each summer.
🗿 Designed by the architect Zeno, legend tells that he built the theatre in an attempt to win the heart of the king’s beautiful daughter. The king, so impressed by its superb acoustics and grand structure, agreed to the marriage, and the couple was wed inside the theatre itself.
🔊 A Marvel of Acoustics – Even today, a whisper from the stage can be heard clearly in the uppermost rows, demonstrating the ingenious engineering of the Roman era.
